Why a Traditional Bed & Breakfast Offers More Value, Comfort, and Warmth Than an Airbnb

When planning a getaway to the Southern Gulf Islands, many travellers instinctively open Airbnb. While short-term rentals can certainly be convenient, they often cost more than expected and rarely match the warmth, comfort, and personalized attention of a traditional bed and breakfast.

On Mayne Island, The Grove Bed & Breakfast offers an experience rooted in genuine hospitality, community connection, and the natural beauty of our forested landscape.

If you’re deciding between an Airbnb and a true Bed & Breakfast for your next island escape, here are the top 10 reasons why staying at The Grove B&B can make your visit more affordable, more memorable, more relaxing, and more meaningful.

1. A warm welcome from hosts who truly care

At a traditional B&B, hospitality isn’t an add-on, it’s part of why you’re here. At The Grove B&B, guests are greeted personally and receive thoughtful attention throughout their stay. We’re available when you need us, respectful of your privacy, and genuinely happy to help.

While many Airbnb stays are self-check-in with little or no host interaction, a B&B offers the comfort of being looked after by people who love hosting.

2. A full, delicious breakfast, made just for you

Breakfast is the heart of the B&B experience, and at The Grove, we take great pride in it. Each morning begins with a freshly prepared, home-cooked meal made with quality ingredients, based on your specific dietary preferences.

We are happy to accommodate vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and other dietary need, no extra fuss, and no packaged pastries.

You have breakfast when YOU want to. Want to sleep in? We'll serve breakfast later. Got to catch an early ferry? We'll rise early to fuel you and send you on your way. Want a coffee to go? Bring us your travel mug and we'll fill it up.

Oh, and the coffee? It’s amazing. We blend Mile Zero Coffee Co.’s Nero Roast and Island Espresso, half and half, and grind the beans just before brewing. If you like a strong, flavourful cup, you’ll be very happy here.

Most Airbnbs offer little more than coffee and a granola bar. At The Grove B&B, breakfast is thoughtful and generous, whether you prefer a warm meal or a lighter option such as fruit, a yogurt parfait or homemade sourdough toast with local jams.

3. Hotel-level comfort in a lush forest setting

Cleanliness and professionalism are at the heart of what we do. Airbnb quality can vary widely, but comfort and consistency are guaranteed at The Grove B&B. Guests enjoy:

  • A peaceful, forested property with towering cedar and fir, and the gentle chorus of birds

  • A relaxing outdoor hot tub with distant views of the ocean

  • Outdoor seating areas perfect for coffee, reading, or quiet reflection

  • Beautiful paintings by Mayne Island artist Terrill Welch

  • Bright, comfortable rooms with thoughtful touches

  • Wi-Fi throughout the property

  • A Level 2 EV charging station

4. Trusted reviews and consistent quality

Check out our Google and Tripadvisor Reviews. Our guests consistently praise:

  • Exceptional hospitality

  • Clean, comfortable rooms

  • Peaceful forest surroundings

  • Delicious breakfasts

  • A welcoming atmosphere that feels like home

Airbnb reviews can be inconsistent, depending on host experience and property standards. A well-run B&B offers reliable, professional care. Every time.

5. Better value than Airbnb and Booking

Once Airbnb fees, cleaning charges, and service costs are added, many rentals end up costing much more than expected.

The Grove B&B is listed on Airbnb and Booking to get more visibility, but if you book your stay directly on mayne.ca, it will be cheaper, and there are no surprise fees. Your stay includes breakfast, amenities, local tips, cleaning, and genuine hospitality, all at a clear and fair rate.

6. Local knowledge you won’t find in an App

An Airbnb can give you a place to stay, but not a connection to the island. As Mayne Island residents, we happily share insider tips and local stories.

Looking for the best beaches? A hidden viewpoint? A quiet trail? A great spot for kayaking? We’re here to help you plan the perfect island day.

7. A central location close to everything

The Grove is ideally situated for exploring Mayne Island. We are:

  • A 5- to 8-minute walk to Gallagher Bay and Piggott Bay

  • A short drive to Miners Bay, the ferry terminal, restaurants, and local shops

  • Near popular trails, viewpoints, and natural attractions

Whether you’re here to hike, cycle, paddle, or simply unwind, everything is scenic walk, ride or short drive away.

8. Stress-free arrival with available guest pick-Up

We offer convenient pick-up and drop-off at the BC Ferries terminal or the community dock for a small fee. We’re also happy to drive guests to the Home Hardware store to rent an e-bike. It’s an easy way to make your arrival smooth and worry-free.

9. A unique home with a story

Many Airbnb homes can feel generic. The Grove, however, has a story to tell.

Originally located in South Surrey, our house was moved to Mayne Island in 2023 and lovingly repurposed among the trees. By repurposing this house instead of having the developer send it to the landfill, we were able to give it new life as an environmentally conscious place to stay on the island..

10. A More Personal and Meaningful Experience

Above all, guests choose The Grove B&B because it offers something deeper than a place to sleep. It’s a space to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience thoughtful, human hospitality.

Some come the the Grove B&B for a place to rest; most leave with a story to tell.
